Story behind Victory in
the Alps
Among those events which Porsche supported from the first with factory cars, the
long-distance Liege - Rome - Liege run was one of the stiffest tests of man and machine
ever held. Drivers crisscrossed Europe in 91 nonstop hours with the outcome decided on the
Stilfser Ioch, Gavia Pass and certain French Alpine passes conquered in the fourth night
of the rally. When Helmut Polensky and his partner Schluter won this difficult rally
out-right in a 1500cc light metal Porsche coupe against English and Italian sports cars
with more than twice the cubic capacity, it proved the durability, maneuverability, and
adaptability to mountains of the Porsches.
